Friday Adventures
Friday Afternoon Club
About the FAC
If the weekly meeting is our front door, The Friday Afternoon Club is the back one. Actually, there’s no door at all because FAC is about exploring the outdoors. Hiking, rock climbing, swimming, and exploring. This is your chance to get off campus and experience some beautiful places and high adventure with other App Students. More than just an adventure, each Friday afternoon is designed to help you learn something new about your faith, wherever you might be in that journey. We think you already listen to enough lectures every week. We also believe people learn best when they experience things for themselves. To that end, our goal for the Friday Afternoon Club is to provide a great environment for you to experience the truths of life in an active, hands-on way. Oh yeah, we’ll try to have some fun along the way.
Details: We will meet at the Trivette parking turnaround at 2pm on Fridays. We usually need drivers so help us out if you can. We’ll try to be good with sharing the cost of gas with a suggested donation of $1 for each passenger. Oftentimes, there is no limit to the number of students who can participate. Other times, like when we are going rock climbing, there will be limited space. This page will be updated for all information regarding upcoming events, locations, and weather cancellations.
Past FAC Events
This Week, Sept 9th, Men and Women have separate adventures.
Men: We will conquer one of the tallest, least-traveled peaks in the NC High Country: Snake Mountain. Here’s a winter shot of Snake. Expect a big elevation gain, off-trail travel, and a see-forever summit ridge line. Bring water, footwear worthy of a rougher hike, and long pants if you want the path of least pain. Meet at Trivette @ 2pm ready to go. We will be back by dinner. Please RSVP
Women:please RSVP
Aug 26: Tubing Party on the New River
Get wet with the FAC this week. We are celebrating the end of summer with a tubing party on the New River. Got your own tube? Awesome. Bring it. Don’t have one, no worries. We’ll hook you up. Imagine a whole river full of App Students, chilling in our inner tubes and celebrating the end of the first week of classes. We’ll have a huge cook just off the river when we reach our destination. view map and driving directions

Nov 12th:
Scavenger Hunt on campus. We are having prizes for the fastest team. We need you to RSVP for this one so that we can plan accordingly. Thanks!
Nov 5th: No FAC this week. The weather looks less than epic. See you next week.
Oct 1st: Men and Women separate.
Calling all men: We have a historic opportunity to help build Boone’s first legal mountain biking trails. We need 12-20 men to “man-up” and do some dirty work. It will be hard, but good. Meet at Trivette at 2pm. Wear closed toe shoes/boots (no sandals) and bring work gloves if you have them. If not, we may be able to provide you with some.
Calling all women: It’s a day at the spa. While the men suffer, we’re going to relax and treat ourselves right. Kick up your feet and prepare to be pampered. Meet at Trivette, 2pm.
Sept 24th: No FAC this week. Come to fall retreat with us!
Sept 17th: Foundations
Grab your hiking shoes and a water bottle and join us for a hike in one of the most spectacular settings in the High Country. Along the way, we’ll look at some cool foundations and talk about building some real foundations in our own lives. As always, be at Trivette at 2pm if you want to join us!
Sept 10th: Ultimate Frisbee
The ultimate college past time: Ultimate Frisbee. We’ll be heading out to the State Farm Fields for some disc action before the weekend. As usual, we’ll leave Trivette Circle at 2pm sharp. Hope to see you out there!
Sept 3rd : A Beautiful Surprise (pics from this week)
Join us this Friday as we unveil a secret spot in the High Country. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, or someone who has never stepped foot out of a bustling city, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy fun and fellowship amongst God’s beautiful creation. Wear your swim suit and be at Trivette Circle at 2pm sharp.
Aug 27th
Mountains To Sea
Trip report: Okay, so this week was CRAZY! Surely the Moutains to Sea Trail has never seen so many people. For the record, we had over 70 students out there. Several passing cars on Shulls Mill wondered if there was a huge accident. We appreciate everybody’s great attitudes and hopefully gave you a sweet spot for return adventures. Check out a few pics
Here’s a sampling of outings from last year
Crash! learning about life through bouldering.
Join us this Friday for an adventure of the vertical variety. We’re going bouldering and we would love for you to join us. Never been? Great, we’ll show you the ropes…actually, there are no ropes in bouldering. Think of it as pure, unencumbered movement over stone. We’ll have extra climbing shoes if you don’t have any and plenty of padding to place on the ground when you fall. The weather looks perfect, hope to see you at Trivette turnaround at 2pm. Please RSVP so that we know your shoe size and who needs to drive.
Oct 30th. Flow.
After a brief lull, the FAC is back in Action this Friday. Hidden beneath the flanks of Beech Mountain is a beautiful gorge that few know about. Come hiking with us as we explore this hidden gem and talk about getting into “The Flow.”
Oct 2nd.
Ladies, bring your camera and join us out on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We’ll be capturing images of the Fall colors and talking about Transformation. Sorry guys, this one is just for women!
Sept 11th: Splash or Trash?
Ever been to Trashcan Falls? It’s a beautiful swimming hole not far from town. Unfortunately, this cool, shady oasis gets trashed by folks who think nothing of leaving behind their cigarette butts and beer cans. We’re going to clean this place up! We’re also going to get the opportunity to experience redemption first hand. Last year, we had a ton of folks come out for this one and it was an absolute blast. One more cool thing about this outing: Last year, Eric took a picture of our cleanup and entered it into some photo competitions. So far, this image has won ever competition, including the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition, The Banff Mountain Photography Competition, and the National Geographic Great Outdoors Photo Competition. Besides being a cool image, most judges loved the redemptive back story.
Sept 4th: A great start to Labor Day weekend. Our trusted Outer Banks guide, Peter, is going to be leading things this Friday. As usual, show up at Trivette turnaround at 2pm.
Friday, Aug 28th: Wet and wild.
Trip report: About 25 of us took a ‘wet and wild’ journey into the backcountry just outside of Boone. We found secret trails, lowered ourselves by rope into a pristine canyon, and then attempted to walk up the slippery creek bed. A special shout out goes to Ryan who had the unpleasant experience of slipping on a slimy rock and breaking his nose. His attitude was great the whole time and Peter, our backcountry rescue expert ,was quick on the scene to bandage Ryan up and get him back home safely.
Details: Friday, Aug. 28th, 2pm Trivette turnaround. Back by dinner. Drivers helpful.
